[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The Ministry of Environment has been carrying out an intensive inspection on over-packaging in 17 cities and provinces across the country ahead of the New Year holidays in order to cut down the unnecessary cost burden of consumers generated by excessive packaging and to prevent waste of resources.

Distribution stores nationwide have been undergoing the inspection that started from February 1 and will be finished on 14. A maximum 300 million won penalty is imposed on those who manufacture or import products in violation of packaging standards.

In particular, gift set such as health functional foods and alcoholic beverages with a high record of sales on holidays should be packaged within the twice of packaging and should follow the packaging space ratio of 25% or less.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment signed an agreement with E-Mart Co., and the Korea Environment Corporation in order to build and operate a self-evaluation system for product packaging, which aims to encourage autonomous eco-friendly packaging by manufacturers and sellers.

"In order to build a resource-recycling society, it is important to save resources and to reduce the generation of unnecessary waste," said the Ministry of Environment. "We will cooperate with civic groups and related industries to develop eco-friendly packaging campaigns."
