Weather Plane Takes the First Observation Flight

[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The Meteorological Administration said that a weather plane carried out the first observation flight on January 30, which was introduced for weather observation and intensive research.

In this flight, the aircraft observed weather conditions such as temperature, humidity, wind and physical characteristics such as cloud particle size and shape in the PyeongChang area and the East Sea where the Winter Olympics are going to be held.

From February 6, it will conduct weather observations over PyeongChang and the East Coast to provide weather information during the 2018 Olympics and Paralympic Games.

Through the observation activity, the plane will provide the East Sea’s weather data regarding temperature, humidity and wind for the Olympic forecasters. It will also provide cloud observation data for the international joint research project (ICE-POP2018) participated by 29 institutions from 12 countries.

The plane will carry out weather observation missions over the Korean Peninsula in order to improve weather control capacity.

Particularly, it is expected that it will help to improve the short-term prediction capabilities of dangerous weather conditions in the country by conducting observations of seasonal danger weather such as typhoon, heavy rainfall, and heavy snow and ocean weather phenomenon.

In addition, it will make air quality observations, monitor the major substances that cause climate change such as greenhouse gas, and analyze physical properties of clouds.
