[The Hwankyung Ilbo] Amendment to the Act on the Management of Zoos and Aquariums, which was initiated by Lee Yong-deuk of the Democratic Party of Korea, has passed the Bill Examination Subcommittee of the Environment and Labor Committee of the National Assembly.

The current law that has been enforced from May of 2017 provided only the basis for the establishment and operation of zoos, and there are no clear standards for proper breeding environment or management.

In addition, even though the Ministry of Environment is the competent Ministry, the law imposes all authority related to the zoo, such as the permission and management of the zoo, on the mayor and governor that has jurisdiction over the location of the zoo.

The amendment, which passed the Subcommittee of Environment and Labor Committee, is evaluated as being progress in that it includes an establishment of a zoo & aquarium management committee under the Ministry of Environment and supply of management guidelines for each animal.
