[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The National Institute of Biological Resources, a specialized research institute for studying the Korean native biological resources in Honam area (the southwestern region of Korea) and the coastal area, will be built in Mokpo-Si with the aim of completion by the end of 2019.
The establishment of the Institute aims to cope with the competition for securing the sovereignty of biological resources and support the domestic biological industry.
The Honam area and the coastal area, which are the study areas of the Institute, have relatively stable ecosystem and have rare and unrecorded organisms.
There is a high possibility that biological resources useful in biotechnology industry are hidden in the region, so it is urgent to systematically discover, preserve and manage the natural biological resources.
The Institute is anticipated to pave the way for responding to the Nagoya Protocol by finding and providing useful biological resources for domestic companies.
