[The Hwankyung Ilbo] Ministry of Environment announced that it would enforce an intensive crackdown on automobile exhaust gas with 17 local governments of cities and provinces, and the Korea Environment Corporation from April 16 to 20 in order to reduce fine dust in the spring.

The area subject to the crackdown is about 240 places including garage, bus terminal, parking lot, roadside, and highway entrance and exit road.

The vehicle to be inspected is stopped among the vehicles on the roads in the 240 places nationwide, and then the exhaust gas measurement device is used to inspect the vehicle exhaust gas on the spot.

Diesel cars are checked for compliance with emission standards of exhaust gas. Gasoline and gas cars are checked for compliance with emission standards such as carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) are checked.

The driver of the vehicle should cooperate with the inspection. A fine of not more than 2 million won will be imposed if the vehicle does not respond to the inspection. Vehicles exceeding the emission limit will be suspended for up to 10 days.

The Ministry of Environment is expecting that the crackdown will increase the awareness that automobile exhaust gas is a major source of fine dust and contribute to the reduction of the generation of fine dust in spring.
