[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The Korea Meteorological Administration announced on May 2 that the Volcano Specialized Research Center was opened at Pusan ​​National University for in-depth research on Mt. Baekdu volcano.

The Volcano Specialized Research Center will analyze the data of volcanic gas change of Mt. Baekdu, the occurrence of surface displacements, temperature change of hot spring water, and conducts in-depth study on the possibility of eruption of volcano of the mountain.

Mt. Baekdu has had over 30 times bigger and smaller eruptions over the last 1000 years. Estimating this as the current Volcano Explosiveness Index (VEI), it is VEI 7, which is one of the largest volcanic eruptions in the world.

“With the establishment of the Volcano Specialized Research Center, we expect it to help settle the people's anxiety about eruption by securing source technology that monitors and predicts the eruption of Mt. Baekdu,” said Nam Jaecheol, the Administrator of the Meteorological Administration. “We will cooperate with relevant ministries and academics in the government to actively pursue inter-Korean cooperation on monitoring the eruption of volcano in Mt. Baekdu.”
