The Ministry of Environment said that the amendment to the Asbestos Safety Management Act, which focused on the system improvement of supervisor of works for dismantling asbestos, will be implemented from May 29.

Through the improvement of the system, it will be possible to check the residue at the completion of asbestos dismantling and removal work and whether the supervisor resides in the field. A fine of up to 3 million won will be imposed on the supervisors who neglected their work.

In the past, if only 35 hours of court education was completed, the supervisor qualification was granted without confirming the supervisory capacity. However, from July, only those who pass the completion examination after training can become supervisor. Supervisors must receive training every three years.

The Ministry of the Environment is organizing a school asbestos monitoring team to improve the system and strengthen the management of asbestos construction in the school, and plans to start full-scale activities from summer vacation this year.

“We hope that this system will improve the transparency and responsible supervision of asbestos construction so that there will not be any controversy due to the discovery of asbestos residue after construction,” an official of the Ministry of Environment said.
