[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The Act on the Management of Zoos and Aquariums, which have been criticized for being imperfect, was amended. On the 28th, the National Assembly held a plenary session and passed some revisions to the law.

Although the law has been in place since May 2017, it only provides the basis for the establishment and operation of the zoo, but there are no provisions to improve the animal welfare, such as proper breeding environment and management standards.

The amendment requires the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to establish a comprehensive plan for zoo and aquarium management and to establish an animal management committee.

In addition, the revision contains the provisions that the two Ministries are required to provide management guidelines for zoos according to the characteristics of species.
