[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The Korea Forest Service announced that it held an official meeting for the establishment of a forest management plan for the DMZ on June 15.

The meeting was set up to organize forest management of the DMZ, which have high ecological value such as forest biodiversity as the good mood or reconciliation between two Koreas is being created with the Panmunjeom Declaration.

Participants of the meeting shared the policy direction and the project plan of the municipalities in accordance with the “DMZ Forest Management Comprehensive Measures (2018-2022)”. They agreed to improve the forest ecosystem through the DMZ survey, restoration of damaged areas and expansion of forest genetic resource protection area.

“The DMZ’s ecological value is high because the forest biodiversity is very high in that there are 229 taxa of rare plants and 91 taxa of special plants,” said an official from the Korea Forest Service. “We will organize a systematic forest management plan so that the DMZ, a symbol of division, can transform into a green peace outpost.”
