Three people were killed and injured in a carbon dioxide leak at Samsung's Giheung plant, and chemical accidents are steadily occurring every year.

According to data submitted to the National Assembly's Environment and Labor Committee from the Ministry of Environment, 510 chemical accidents occurred from 2013 to June 2018, and 544 cases of human casualties were found.

By year, the number increased from 86 in 2013 to 105 in 2014 and decreased to 78 in 2016 but increased again to 87 in 2017 and 41 in the first half of 2018.

By chemical accident type, insufficient facility management accounted for 212 cases, worker carelessness 179 cases, transportation vehicle accident 111 cases, and natural disasters 8 cases.

"In order to prevent chemical accidents, prevention and countermeasures are more important than anything," said  Lim Yi-ja of the Liberty Korea Party.
