[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The Ministry of Environment said that in order to reduce the unnecessary cost burden of consumers due to over packaging and to prevent waste of resources, the 17 cities and provinces across the country will intensively check excessive packaging ahead of the Chuseok holidays.

The inspections will be conducted for about two weeks from September 10 to 21, and fines of up to 3 million won will be imposed on those who manufacture and import products against the packaging standards.

In particular, gift sets such as primary food and alcoholic beverages, which have a large sales volume on holidays, should comply with packaging methods that are within twice of the number of packages and packing space ratio of 25% or less.

"The manufacturing and import companies themselves need to make efforts to reduce the generation of packaging waste rather than the government detects over-packed products by crackdown," said an official from the Ministry of Environment. “We hope that an eco-friendly consumption culture can be established.”
