[The Hwankyung Ilbo] Korea`s employment in renewable energy sectors is far below the global average.

Rep. Wi Seong-gon of the ruling Democratic Party said that the number of workers in renewable energy in Korea is about 14,000, which is 0.13% of that of the 10.34 million people in the world's renewable energy industry in 2017 according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

Since Korea's renewable energy generation capacity is 9387MW, which accounts for about 0.43% of 2178GW of global power generation capacity, it requires more than 44,000 workers arithmetically, but the actual employment size is about 14,000.

In May, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced that it would create about 200,000 jobs by 2022, and that about 150,000 of them will be created through investment in new energy industries such as renewable energy.

“The right answer to job creation will be the renewable energy industry in the era of low-carbon economy,” said Rep. Wi Seong-gon. “As an alternative industry for job creation, it is essential to improve the level of employment along with fostering renewable energy industry.”
