[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The government plans to designate Korea's major ports as Emission Control Area (ECA) starting from 2020 and strengthen the regulations on air pollutants from ships.

The government will reduce the current emissions of sulfur dioxide from ships to less than 0.1 percent from less than 3.5%. This is stronger than the ‘IMO2020’ that restricts the acceptance criteria for sulfur content of ship fuel oil to below 0.5%.

As of 2018, the government estimates that 21,000 tons of air pollutants are released in domestic ports for one year and air pollutants from domestic ports will be reduced to 8,000 tons by 2020 when ECA is implemented.

The government`s policy is expected to play a major role in boosting the vitality of the troubled small and mid-sized shipbuilders and the shipbuilding industry.
