'한국 수돗물, 유네스코 국제인증 추진'

[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The Ministry of Environment announced that it will hold a seminar on 'pilot project for tap water international certification system' for local governments in order to recommend Korea's city for international tap water certification, which is being pushed by UNESCO.

The international certification system, which UNESCO plans to introduce in 2021, evaluates the safety of tap water in order to increase the reliability and drinking rate of tap water in cities around the world.

UNESCO plans to carry out a one-year pilot project by selecting one of Korea's cities in January next year after receiving and evaluating applications at the end of this year. After completing improvements through the pilot projects, UNESCO is set to implement the ‘International Water Certification System for Tap Water’ from 2021 by receiving applications from cities around the world.

“If a Korean city receives international certification of tap water from UNESCO, the water management technology of Korea will be recognized internationally and it will help solve environmental pollution problems,” said an official from the Ministry of Environment. “We will continue to work with UNESCO to contribute to the successful settlement of the tap water certification system and the resolution of the global water problem. “
