[The Hwankyung Ilbo] Rep. Yoo Seung-hee of the Democratic Party of Korea said on Thursday that she proposed a revision bill to the Act on the Promotion of Saving and Recycling of Resources, which introduces the deposit system for empty containers that can be used repeatedly.

Under the current Presidential Decree, when selling production containers, the government requires sellers to include deposits for empty bottles, which encourages recycling and reduces the use of empty bottles by receiving deposits if consumers return empty bottles.

25 countries around the world including Germany, Denmark, Norway and Switzerland are increasing the recycling rate by introducing deposit systems for plastic bottles and cans as well as the empty bottles.

“The recycling crisis shows that the current recycling measures have loopholes,” Yoo Seung-hee of the Democratic Party of Korea said. “In order to supplement this system and increase the recycling rate, we need to expand the recycling deposit system to plastic bottles and cans.”
