[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The Ministry of Environment failed to revise related laws for several months after it announced in September last year that it would make it mandatory for coal-fired power plants to build a coal yard in buildings to contain dust particles.

According to data submitted by the Ministry of Environment to Rep. Shin Chang-hyun of the Democratic Party of Korea, only five out of 12 thermal power plants affiliated with KEPCO completed internalization of outdoor coal fields.

According to statistics from the National Institute of Environmental Research, the fine dust generated from outdoor coal yards annually is estimated to be about 5.2 tons (as of 2015).

The reason why the internalization of outdoor coal fields has been delayed is because the review of the revised Enforcement Regulation of the Clean Air Conservation Act, which is the basis of the law, has not been completed.

“We must hurry to internalize the outdoor coal yards in order to control the generation of flying dust, which causes the generation of high-density fine dust,” Rep. Shin Chang-hyun said.
