[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The government and the cement industry have agreed to reduce imports of coal ash that Japanese coal ash accounts for 99% by 70% in the next five years.

Last year, 3.15 million tons of coal ash were used in cement production in Korea, of which 40.9%, or 1.29 million tons, were imported, with 99% of imports coming from Japan.

After Japan implemented export-regulatory measures in July, the Environment Ministry, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the cement companies and the power generators discussed ways to replace imported coal ash.

As a result, the cement industry, which is producing cement using coal ash, has agreed to replace imported coal ash with other materials such as domestic coal ash and clay.

Last year, 2.51 million tons of coal ash were buried in Korea, which is a figure that can replace Japanese coal ash.
