[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The Ministry of Environment released the naturally occurring asbestos geological map through the asbestos management information network (asbestos.me.go.kr).

Naturally occurring asbestos refers to asbestos existing in rocks or soil due to natural activities such as geological action.

The geological map released a map of the distribution of rocks that may contain naturally occurring asbestos on a scale of 1: 50,000 based on geological literature survey and rough field survey.

According to the map, about 0.44% (436.58㎢) of the national land area (10,708㎢) is a rock area that may contain naturally occurring asbestos.

In areas where naturally occurring asbestos is highly likely to exist, the government plans to prepare detailed geological maps that can identify the distribution status of naturally occurring asbestos through geological surveys, sampling and analysis.
