[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The Ministry of Environment said that 12,234 children’s activity areas were examined and 1,781 facilities, or 14.6 percent, were found to be in violation of environmental safety standards last year.

In 2017, about 110,000 children's activity places were subject to the environmental safety management standards, including daycare centers, kindergarten classrooms, elementary schools, and libraries with an area of 430㎡ or more.

Of these 1,781 violation facilities, the number of cases exceeding the heavy metal standards of paints and finishing materials was found to be 1,588, which is 89.2%.

Based on the results of the inspection, local governments and education offices issued an order to improve the facilities that were found to be in violation of the management standards. As of August 20, 1,593 facilities, or 89.4% completed the improvement.

“We will continue to conduct guidance inspections with local governments and the education offices to ensure that the children's activity space can be managed safely, and we will take measures to improve the standards violation facilities by issuing an order and revealing a list of violation facilities,” said an official from the Ministry of Environment.
