Estimates 1.27 million households in energy poverty that are difficult to cope with climate change.

[The Hwankyung Ilbo] Dongho (9 years old) who lives in the Seoul metropolitan area, is more resentful of coronavirus these days. This is because non-face-to-face online classes are being held in full due to the four-step increase in distance from the Seoul metropolitan area. Dongho, who lives with his grandmother, spends a day in a small rented apartment with only one room. You have to withstand the heat of the fire with one fan. For him, home is like a sauna where he wants to escape.

As the heat wave continues due to rapid climate change, the pain of low-income children is increasing. According to data from the Korea Electricity Association (2020), 1.27 million households are estimated to be "energy poverty" that is difficult to cope with climate change (based on the absolute poverty of minimum living benefits for four-person families). In particular, the air conditioner penetration rate of low-income households in Seoul is confirmed to be around 18% (Seoul Research Institute, 2019), and support for children who take non-face-to-face classes in the heat wave is in dire need.

In response, the Green Umbrella Children's Foundation (Chairman Lee Je-hoon) has stepped up to help children suffering from climate change. Through the #ClimateDiaryChallenge, the foundation plans to convey to society the seriousness of climate change revealed by the heat wave and ask for support for children suffering from the heat.

"#ClimateDiaryChallenge" is a diary of experiences of experiencing climate change in daily life and practicing eco-friendly life, and you can post it on SNS with essential hashtags and point out a friend to join the challenge. The period is until August 31, and anyone can participate.

Through the lottery, the "Green Umbrella Weather Forecast" kit (KIT) that consists of umbrellas, multi-use thermal water bags, eco-friendly soap, and tumblers that can prevent heat waves, heavy rain, fine dust, and cold waves will also be presented. Details can be found on the official website of the Green Umbrella Children's Foundation.

Lee Je-hoon, chairman of the Green Umbrella Children's Foundation, said, "Our children's daily lives are threatened by the heat wave caused by climate change," adding, "Please gather interest and power in climate change so that our children, who are future generations, can have a happy day without fear of the future."

Meanwhile, the Green Umbrella Children's Foundation is conducting an annual campaign to convey awareness of climate change issues to society and support children suffering from climate change. In April, a digital advertisement called "A Wacky Imagination of Protecting the Climate Environment" was launched with the Heat Wave version being recently added.
