IPCC 6th Report Disclosure··Abnormal Climate Warning due to Climate Change

[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released part of the IPCC's sixth report on climate change on the 9th.

"The average global temperature is 1.09 degrees celsius higher than before industrialization, and the carbon dioxide concentration is at its worst in two million years," the report stated.

He also warned that an unprecedented abnormal climate would occur if the temperature rise reached 1.5 degrees celsius.

"This report confirmed that climate change is progressing more seriously than originally predicted based on scientific evidence," said Kim Ji-seok, a member of Greenpeace's climate energy committee. "In order to survive from the climate crisis, we must achieve the 1.5 degree limit, and to do so, we must immediately reduce greenhouse gases."

"All companies should adjust their business structure to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions according to the goals of the Paris Agreement," he said. "Greenwashing should be avoided depending on offsetting effects (offset) without any real greenhouse gas reduction measures such as expanding renewable energy use."

In addition, Kim said, "The International Energy Agency's IEA, which was created by the interests of the fossil fuel industry, is also in an urgent situation that emphasizes the transition to renewable energy by proposing to stop investment in coal power plants and expel internal combustion engines."

"In 2020, more than 80% of new power facilities were filled with renewable energy. In particular, solar and wind power are now mainstream energy sources, and economic feasibility is continuously improving. "We need policymakers' decisions to remove fossil fuels, compensation for quick transition, and social consensus."

"The cost of not responding to the climate crisis should be an important consideration," Jang said. "In order to prevent the worst social and economic damage caused by late response, greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced by more than half from the current level by 2030 and carbon neutrality must be realized before 2050. It is time for the government and the presidential candidates to make policies and pledges."

"People around the world are raising their voices calling for a response to the climate crisis in elections and filing lawsuits against the government and greenhouse gas-emitting companies," Jang said. "People are calling for a more active response to the climate crisis in Korea."
