[The Hwankyung Ilbo] In the last seven years, the traffic volume has increased nationwide, while the public transportation usage rate has decreased.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Maritime Affairs analyzed national traffic survey data from 2010 to 2016, showing that the nationwide share ratio of passenger cars increased from 60.4% to 61%, while the share ratio of public transportation including buses and subways decreased from 39.3% to 38.0% .
As passenger traffic increases, environmental costs due to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions are estimated to reach 33.4 trillion won by 2014.
“We need to build up a convenient and safe public transportation system and raise public transportation share ratio to more than 50 percent first,” the Korea Federation for Environment Movements said. “We need to expand bus lanes and public transportation districts in major cities.”
