[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The Ministry of Environment said that an Amendment to the Enforcement Decree of the Natural Parks Act was approved by the Cabinet meeting on March 6.

According to the decision, drinking behavior in places and facilities designated by the park management office, including shelters, trails and mountaintops in natural parks (national parks, provincial parks and municipal parks) will be prohibited from March 13. In case of first violation, 50,000 won, second and third violation, 100,000 won of penalty will be imposed.

The revised bill additionally prohibits planting of exotic plants as well as unleashing exotic animals that has already not been allowed by the current law. It also imposes fines for smoking in the areas other than designated ones.

The amendment also includes measures to improve the organization and operation of the National Park Committee to expand private participation and enhance conflict resolution.

The Ministry of Environment is expecting that the amendment will reduce safety accidents caused by drinking alcohol in national parks, enhance the neutrality and fairness of deliberation by the National Park Committee, and strengthen the systematic conservation and management of the parks.
