[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The Ministry of Environment surveyed the amount of annual emissions of air pollutants from 637 plants equipped with chimney automatic measuring devices in 2017, resulting in 361,459 tons, a decrease of 40,218 tons compared to the previous year.

The air pollutants measured by the measuring instrument include nitrogen oxide, sulfur oxide, dust, hydrogen fluoride, ammonia, carbon monoxide and hydrogen chloride.

Of the total 361,459 tons of air pollutant emissions in 2017, nitrogen oxide accounts for 67% with 242,441 tons, followed by sulfur oxide 109,339 tons (30%), dust 6,533 tons (2%), and carbon monoxide 2,631 tons (1%).

The result by industry shows that power generation industry accounts for 47% (168,167 tons) of the total amount and followed by cement manufacturing 22% (77,714 tons), iron and steel making industry 16% (59,127 tons), and other industries 5% (19,877 tons).

According to the analysis based on the amount of emissions of air pollutants by provinces, Chungcheongnam-do accounts for 24% (87,135 tons) Gangwon-do 15% (55,409 tons), Jeollanam-do 14% (50,411 tons) and Gyeongsangnam-do 13% (46,447 tons).
