[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The National Institute of Biological Resources under the Ministry of Environment announced that a total of 759,393 birds of 164 species arrived in winter after conducting bird-watching surveys of 80 major wetlands nationwide from November 16 to 17 this year.

The total population increased about 1.7 times from 455,101 compared to the results in the same region in mid-October and increased about 1.25 times from 607,656 compared with the same period last year.

Geographically, in mid-October, the region that the birds visited was concentrated in the central region of the Korean peninsula such as Gyeonggi-do, Gangwon-do, and Chungcheongnam-do. In November, it spread evenly across other parts of the Korean peninsula including Jeollanam-do, Gyeongsangnam-do.

"We plan to provide the results to relevant agencies and post them on the Migratory Bird Information System(species.nibr.go.kr/bird) so that they can be used for bird flu prevention and prevention of farms," said a researcher of the National Institute of Biological Resources.
