[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The Ministry of Environment announced that ‘Technical Committee for Automobile Emission Classification DB’ has classified about 2.69 million into the 5th grade and 900,000 into the 1st grade among 23 million vehicles registered nationwide.
According to the regulation on the calculation of the emission grade of automobiles, electric cars and hydrogen cars are rated the 1st grade, gasoline and gas vehicles, the 1st to 5th grade, diesel vehicles are the 3rd grade to 5th grade.
The 5th grade cars will be restricted from operating when high concentration of fine dust occurs from February 15, next year, when the Special Law on Fine Dust Reduction and Management is implemented in the Seoul metropolitan area.
"In order to effectively operate automobile emission classification system, it is important to establish a database that systematically organizes vehicle emission rating information." Said an official from the Ministry of Environment. “We are going to categorize the 2nd to 4th grade vehicles in the first half of next year and continuously inspect whether the vehicle has been classified correctly during the inspection process.”
