[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The K-water under the Ministry of Environment announced that it will sign a memorandum of implementation of 'joint development of satellite-use technologies in water management and water disaster areas' with the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on December 19.

In accordance with the memorandum, both organizations will jointly develop a Korean version of NASA's observation system called 'LIS (Land Information System)' that analyzes climate change, water resources, and interaction with the surface by utilizing satellites.

The Korean LIS will be promoted through the R & D project of the Ministry of Environment and will be established by 2020, reflecting the geographical features and environmental characteristics of Korea.

The two organizations plan to strengthen cooperation in all areas of water such as exchange of technologies and manpower, workshop, and technical support for developing countries.

In addition, the K-water plans to develop a ‘global satellite-based water disaster monitoring and evaluation prediction platform’ based on the Korean LIS.

The K-water is expected to secure world-class satellite application technology in cooperation with NASA, and to improve water-related disaster monitoring capabilities, thereby providing a chance to respond to climate change more proactively.
