[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The Korea Food and Drug Administration and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries made an announcement that mineral extract from deep sea water has been approved as a new food ingredient.

Based on research results such as toxic assessment of mineral extract carried out by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries from 2017 and data on foreign status of usage, manufacturing methods and characteristics of raw materials, mineral extract of deep sea water has been recognized as a new food ingredient after examination by the Food and Drug Administration.

Deep sea water, which exists 200 meters below water level, is a marine water source with low temperature and purity and contains minerals such as magnesium and calcium.

The mineral extract is a powder material obtained through the process of concentrating and separating the deep sea water, and it is expected to be used as raw material for foods such as breads, beverages and liquors.

With the revision of the related law, the manufacturing related to deep sea  water will be established in the law and it is expected that the deep sea water industry will become more active.  

“The use of deep sea mineral extracts for various foods is expected to expand the deep sea water consumer segment and create new markets,” an Official from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said. “We will actively support the deep sea water industry to continue to grow by developing high value-added technologies and improving the system.”
