[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The National Institute of Forest Science plans to set up a ‘Landslide Prediction and Analysis Center to prevent landslides.

Korea has experienced landslides of about 400ha every year (1976 ~ 2017) due to heavy rain during summer. Over the last 10 years, an annual average of 240 hectares of landslides has killed 6 people and has caused restoration costs 45.5 billion won every year.

The National Institute of Forest Science analyzes the soil water index (the relative amount of water contained in the soil) for landslide forecasting, issues the landslide watch when it reaches 80% of the standard value and delivers the forecast of the landslide warning when it reaches 100%.

Since 2015, IoT-based landslide unmanned remote monitoring system has been installed at four sites to monitor areas that could lead to large-scale damage.
