[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The amount of waste imported into Korea last year was 2.4 million tons. 2.3 million tons in 2015, 2.33 million tons in 2016, and it has been growing for three consecutive years, more than 12 times of 190,000 tons of waste exports of Korea last year. Of these, waste with harmful properties amounted to 587,617 tons, accounting for about 20% of total imports.

Combustion residues accounted for the largest portion with 1,367,412 tons (57.0%), followed by 480,617 tons (20.1%) of waste batteries and 168,136 tons (7.0%) of waste cooking oil.

Currently, the import and export of wastes is controlled and managed in accordance with the Act on the Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Waste and Their Disposal.

“Importing 40 tons of waste transformers is evidence that our country is still an environmentally underdeveloped country," the Democratic Party lawmaker Shin Chang-hyun said. “It is necessary to prohibit imports of hazardous wastes and conduct precise monitoring of the domestic processing process.”
