[The Hwankyung Ilbo] Seoul has begun cracking down on the town buses to reduce emissions of automobiles, the main source of fine dust.
Seoul City has been carrying out special crackdown on idling for 142 bus companies since July 2, as the number of cars idling in summer has increased dramatically.
Automobile idling generates exhaust gas containing 'NOx', which is a cause of fine dust and ultrafine dust, and causes air pollution.
When an automobile idling is detected, the detention center issues a first warning to the drivers. If the idling continues, a penalty of 50,000 won will be imposed. However, 2772 places (including the village bus garage) in the restricted area for idling are charged with fines immediately upon detection without warning.
“If we reduce idling, we can save energy and improve air quality by reducing greenhouse gas and fine dust,” said a senior official at the Seoul Metropolitan Government. “We will continue to carry out crackdown on idling and check exhaust gas to reduce air pollutant emissions.”
