'태양광 환경영향평가, 5년 만에 23배 급증'

[The Hwankyung Ilbo] Between January and September of this year, the number of environmental impact assessments for solar power generation projects across the country increased to 2,119, more than 23 times in five years.

According to data submitted to the Democratic Party’s lawmaker Shin, Chang-hyun from the Ministry of Environment, for the past five years, the number of environmental impact assessments for solar power generation projects rose steadily from 91 in 2013, 190 in 2014, 354 in 2015, 432 in 2016, 1,320 in 2017 and to 2,119 from January to September this year.

Among the 4506 cases, 85 and 25 were decided to be not agreed or to be turned down, respectively, and 123 were voluntarily withdrawn. About 94.8%, or 4,273 cases, were found to have obtained conditional approval.

"The solar power generation itself is definitely eco-friendly, but there are two sides in the process of business and location selection, such as damaging forests, land and landscape,” said Rep. Shin, Chang-hyun.
