[The Hwankyung Ilbo] Environment Minister Cho Myung-rae met with the governor of Shanxi province, China on February 27 to discuss ways to strengthen environmental cooperation, such as a project to reduce fine dust.

Shanxi province is suffering from serious air pollution as heavy industry has developed into the second largest coal production area in China.

Accordingly, in order to solve the problem of air pollution, Shanxi province is intensively pushing forward the ultra-low emission policy to lower the air pollutants emitted from coal-fired power generation to the level emitted from natural gas-fired power generation.

The two sides decided to carry out pilot projects together starting in June this year in order to expand the fine dust reduction cooperation field from large-scale facilities such as power plants and steelworks to medium-sized boilers.

“We have been able to see the achievements of the actual fine dust reduction project, and we hope to create a Northeast Asian breathing community for a healthy life of the people in both countries by strengthening cooperation with Shanxi province in the future,” the Minister said.
