[The Hwankyung Ilbo] Forest restoration projects will be carried out in earnest to maintain and promote the ecosystem and biodiversity of the DMZ, Baekdudaegan Mountain Range and island areas.

The Korea Forest Service said the revision to the Creation and Management of Forest Resources Act took effect from July 9, allowing the forest restoration work to be carried out systematically and efficiently.

The revision sets out the basic principle of forest restoration to ensure the sustainability of the forest ecosystem, and requires the government to draw up a basic plan for forest restoration and a yearly implementation plan in accordance with the basic principle.

It also requires to monitor forest restoration sites and designates forest restoration support centers to support policy development, consulting on restoration projects and research and development of restoration technologies and methods.

The Korea Forest Service will conduct a survey of forest restoration targets and evaluate the feasibility of the project. In addition, the government plans to conduct a comprehensive and systematic forest restoration policy by training professionals.
