[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The Ministry of Environment will launch a public campaign from September 11 to reduce food waste for Chuseok this year.
Korea's food waste was generated 15,903 tons per day as of 2017, accounting for 29.7% of the total daily waste of 53,490 tons.
The amount of food waste has been on the rise every year due to the increase in the number of households and the improvement of living standards.
In particular, during the holiday season, the amount of food waste released by households increases sharply by more than 20%.
Food waste is not only an economic waste, which costs more than 800 billion won a year to dispose of it, but also emits odors and greenhouse gases during processing. It is very important to reduce food waste in terms of environment and economy.
The Ministry of Environment has organized a public campaign to reduce the number of food items in order to create a frugal food culture on Chuseok.
